There are many different types of houses in Thornbury and surrounding areas: from stone-built cottages and farmhouses to modern, new-build properties. Each has different energy needs and opportunities, depending on whether they are connected to the main gas grid, how and to what extent they are insulated, and other factors.
‘Retrofit’ simply means making changes to a property after it was built. In practice, this can include a vast range of different projects. At one end of the scale, draught-proofing doors and gaps can cost only a few pounds and be completed in a day. Adding loft insulation can have a significant effect on the heat efficiency of a home. A thermal imaging survey can also help you understand where your home is losing heat, and therefore where you need to invest money and effort to have the greatest impact. Members of our community have also undertaken much larger, more complex projects in their own homes and rental properties to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels for electricity generation, batteries to store power for when it is needed, solar water heaters, and heat pumps.
